MATCH REPORT - Pontyclun RFC 25 - Aberavon Green Stars RFC 26

Aberavon Green Stars achieved a hard fought away win against Division 3 East Central Pontyclun in the third round of the WRU Bowl competition today. The leaders of Division 3 West Central found themselves eleven points adrift at the end of the first quarter but kept their heads and under the leadership of captain Alwyn Williams at lock started the fight back. Pontyclun winger Lloyd Wilkins crossed for a try after five minutes before Nicky Theaker put over two penalties. Leading the visitors' fight back was player/coach Richard Evans with a try and then on the half hour came a push over try dabbed down by their opportunist number eight Karl Larkworthy. Outside half Sean Curran converted and just before the half time whistle he kicked a penalty for an interval lead of 11 - 15.

The third quarter turned into a penalty competition with Pontyclun regaining the lead 20 -18 from three penalties by Theaker and Curran responding with just one. Aberavon Green Stars hit back within two minutes with their third try by centre Kevin Thomas ahead of Sean Curran's third penalty making the score 20 - 26. The remaining fifteen minutes was a titanic struggle in which Nicky Theaker crossed the line for the home team virtually on time to make the score 25 - 26. Lloyd Wilkins' conversion seemed to hang in the air before going just wide, to the obvious delight of the orange, green and white visitors.

Next Saturday Aberavon Green Stars return to league duties away to Tonmawr RFC and also hope to add to their Silver Ball tally.
